Bowel Cancer New Zealand

Win the most epic poo of your life by getting to know your bowels.

Bowel cancer is one of the deadliest cancers in Aotearoa. But when found early, more than 90% of bowel cancer cases are curable.

Too many Kiwi miss the signs simply because they don't know what to look for, or dismiss symptoms that could be something more serious.

This month, we're encouraging more people to get to the bottom of it by learning the symptoms of bowel cancer.

Take the checker, learn what to look for, and go in the draw to win a poo with one of the best views in New Zealand.

Symptom 1 of 6 · Blood in your poo

Have you noticed blood in your poo or on the toilet paper?

Blood in your poo or on the toilet paper can have many causes, but it's important to get checked – especially if it keeps happening. The blood may be bright red or darker in colour.

Symptom 2 of 6 · Change in bowel habits

Have you noticed ongoing changes in your bowel habits?

Changes in your bowel habits can include going more or less often than usual, looser poos, constipation, narrower poos, or changes that just aren't normal for you. If these changes continue for more than a few weeks, it's important to get them checked.

Symptom 3 of 6 · Tummy pain or discomfort

Do you have ongoing tummy pain or discomfort that comes and goes?

Ongoing tummy pain, cramping, bloating, or discomfort that doesn't go away should be checked – especially if it keeps coming back.

Symptom 4 of 6 · A lump in your tummy

Have you noticed a lump, swelling, or bloating in your tummy?

A lump, swelling, or bloating in your tummy that doesn't go away should always be checked by your GP.

Symptom 5 of 6 · Unusual or ongoing tiredness

Are you feeling unusually tired or fatigued?

Feeling unusually tired all the time can sometimes be linked to low iron levels (anaemia) or blood loss you may not be aware of. If your tiredness isn't improving, it's important to get checked.

Symptom 6 of 6 · Unexplained weight loss

Have you lost weight without trying?

Losing weight without trying can be a sign that something isn't right. If this is happening, it's important to speak with your GP.
